look up

on hearing that a good friend is taking a job in another town:

in our neighborhood,
the apples blossom just as
the jasmine turns brown

discernment

neighborhood kitten,
baby songbird in its teeth,
underneath spring stars

evening bell

work done for the day
calm within this messy house
wrists and ankles free

uninsulated

spring night. old house creaks.
cold seeps in through the floorboards,
smelling of jasmine.

koan study

compare and contrast:
stare into the flashlight, or
shine it on the road?
